Description

Bangers and Mash is a classic British comfort food featuring juicy sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes, complemented by a rich and savory onion gravy. This hearty recipe combines simple ingredients into a satisfying meal perfect for any weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Sausages

  • 1 lb quality sausages (pork, chicken, or vegetarian)

Potatoes

  • 2 lbs starchy potatoes (like Russets), peeled and chopped
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½ cup milk or cream

Onion Gravy

  • 2 medium onions, sliced
  • 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Sausages: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausages until they are golden brown all over, approximately 10 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even cooking.
  2. Boil Potatoes: Fill a pot with salted water and bring it to a boil. Add the peeled and chopped potatoes and cook until tender when pierced with a fork, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Make Onion Gravy: Using the same skillet from the sausages, add the sliced onions and sauté over medium heat until they become caramelized and deep golden brown. Add the low-sodium beef broth to the skillet, then simmer and reduce the mixture until it thickens into a rich gravy.
  4. Mash Potatoes: Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly, then return them to the pot. Add the butter, milk or cream, salt, and pepper. Mash the potatoes until creamy and smooth.
  5. Assemble: Plate the creamy mashed potatoes and top them with the cooked sausages. Spoon the warm onion gravy over the sausages and potatoes before serving.

Notes

  • Use starchy potatoes like Russets for the creamiest mash.
  • For a richer mash, use cream instead of milk.
  • Vegetarian sausages can easily substitute traditional pork or chicken.
  • Ensure onions are fully caramelized to deepen the flavor of the gravy.
  • Beef broth can be substituted with vegetable broth for a milder taste or vegetarian option.
  • Season the onion gravy and mashed potatoes carefully with salt and pepper to balance flavors.
