Ingredients
Scale
Beef Mixture
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ small onion, diced
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- ½ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- Salt and pepper to taste
Toast & Toppings
- 4–6 slices thick-cut bread (sourdough or Texas toast)
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon butter (optional, for toasting)
- Chopped parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for toasting the bread and melting the cheese.
- Cook Beef: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef thoroughly. Drain any excess grease to avoid sogginess.
- Sauté Vegetables: Add diced onion and minced garlic to the beef in the skillet. Cook them together for 2–3 minutes until the onions are softened and fragrant.
- Add Seasonings: Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 5–7 minutes to let the flavors meld and the sauce thicken.
- Prepare Toast: Arrange the bread slices on a baking sheet. Toast them lightly in the oven for 4–5 minutes. Alternatively, butter the bread and toast it in a skillet for extra crispness if preferred.
- Assemble: Spoon the sloppy joe beef mixture evenly over each slice of toasted bread. Generously sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese on top of each portion.
- Melt Cheese: Return the assembled toasts to the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and slightly golden.
- Garnish & Serve: Remove from the oven, sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired, and serve warm for a delightful meal or snack.
Notes
- For a spicy kick, add a dash of hot sauce or chopped jalapeños to the beef mixture.
- This recipe is great for a quick lunch, snack, or game day meal.
- Use pre-sliced cheese to save time without compromising flavor.
