Ingredients
Scale
For the Burger Patties
- 1 ½ pounds ground beef (80/20)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
For the Sandwiches
- 4 tablespoons butter (softened)
- 8 slices sandwich bread (thick-cut works best)
- 8 slices cheddar or American cheese
- 4 slices mozzarella or Swiss cheese
- Optional: sliced tomatoes, pickles, onions, ketchup, or mustard
Instructions
- Prepare the grill or skillet: Preheat a grill or skillet over medium-high heat to get a nice searing surface for the burger patties.
- Make the patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently but thoroughly. Divide and form into 4 equal-sized patties, each slightly larger than your bread slices to allow for shrinkage while cooking.
- Cook the burgers: Place the patties on the grill or skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Remove the patties and let them rest while you prepare the sandwiches.
- Prepare the bread: Spread softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. Heat a skillet or griddle to medium heat for assembling the sandwiches.
- Assemble the sandwiches on the skillet: Place 4 slices of bread, butter-side down, on the heated skillet. Top each slice with one slice of cheddar and one slice of mozzarella cheese.
- Add the cooked patties: Place one burger patty on top of the cheese layers on each bread slice. Then top each patty with another slice of cheddar and mozzarella.
- Complete the sandwich: Place the remaining bread slices on top, butter-side up.
- Grill the sandwiches: Cook each sandwich for 2–3 minutes per side until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling and melting.
- Serve: Serve warm with optional toppings such as sliced tomatoes, pickles, onions, ketchup, or mustard according to your preference.
Notes
- For additional flavor, brush the inside of the bread with garlic butter before assembling the sandwiches.
- Add caramelized onions inside the sandwich for a sweet, rich taste variation.
- If making multiple sandwiches at once, you can bake the assembled sandwiches in a preheated 375°F oven for 10–12 minutes instead of skillet grilling.
